Augmented Reality

You may be more familiar with Virtual Reality (VR) because of the advertisement of products like VR headsets or interactive games and experiences. However, Augmented Reality (AR) is also an interactive technology that allows for experiencing things without the need for expensive equipment. AR overlays digital content on top of what one sees in reality. This means that you can see an everyday object and use a device like your phone to interact with images, audio, video, or 3D models that are overlaid on the object you see in person. A popular example of this is the game Pokémon GO. By using your mobile phone and GPS, the app uses augmented reality for you to find, capture, train, and battle different Pokémon, all while you are in a physical location. However, it is important to also recognize how AR can be used in heritage preservation initiatives.

Memory Lane uses AR technology to provide a means (1) to digitally preserve main street history and (2) to allow users to interact with that history. This project uses historical photographs sourced from the historic society, library, and community members and overlays them on particular physical locations down Main Street. Users are able to scan QR codes placed along Main Street to view the history of each location and view these historical photographs. With the use of AR, community members and tourists alike will be able to participate in experiential learning initiatives and collaborate with others, building upon and sustaining Romeo’s downtown history.
